It was a rainy morning. The train was soon filled with the odours of musty raincoats, wet wool and damp leather. September sat opposite her father. That was the advantage of living in the outer suburbs, you almost always got a seat. Most of the commuters sat reading newspapers or were deep in thought.

When they disembarked at the station, September’s father suggested that since he had to walk that way, he could accompany her to the main entrance, rather than the smaller side entrance she’d taken last time. On their way past the tunnel, September noticed that the corner where Sweet Pea and her sweet cart had stood last week was empty. She scanned the station, but the distinctive cart was nowhere to be seen.

As she and her father approached the grand flight of steps in front of the Name Bank, September thought of the last time she’d been here. She shuddered.

“Here, you can take my jacket if you like. I’ve got a spare one at work,” said her father, assuming she was cold.

“I’m fine, Dad. It’s really warm inside.” She nodded towards the doors. “I’d better go. Thanks for coming with me. I’ll see you afterwards.” September spoke as brightly as she could, despite her mouth being so dry she felt like she’d been chewing on a wad of cotton wool.
